AC Milan, one of Europe’s premier clubs, have advanced to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 11 years after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on aggregate following a goalless draw in the second leg.
Despite the return of head coach Antonio Conte, Tottenham were unable to produce any real scoring chances in front of their home crowd, managing only two shots on target throughout the game.
Milan, on the other hand, had opportunities to add to their lead, with Brahim Diaz, who scored in the first leg, coming close to scoring again, only to be denied by Tottenham’s second-choice goalkeeper Forster.
Tottenham began to mount some pressure on Milan as the match wore on, but their hopes were dashed when World Cup-winning defender Romero was sent off for a cynical challenge on Hernandez. In the dying moments of the game, Harry Kane was denied by Milan goalkeeper Maignan, while Divock Origi hit the post.
Milan’s victory means that they have advanced to their first Champions League quarterfinal since 2012, while Tottenham have been knocked out of the competition. It was a disappointing outcome for the English side, who were hoping to make a deeper run in the tournament under Conte’s leadership.
