The Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC, has refuted reports claiming that it has canceled the planned statewide demonstration that was set to take place on Wednesday.
Online reports said that the union agreed to postpone the planned protest following a meeting with government representatives.
However, the NLC urged Nigerians to disregard the rumor in a statement sent on Tuesday night by Comrade Joe Ajaero, the organization’s president, saying it has “neither reconsidered nor suspended the nationwide mass protest.”
According to Ajaero, the union met with government representatives on Tuesday to further urge its demands as the country’s hardships grow due to the elimination of fuel subsidies.
He claimed that no agreement could be achieved, hence the conference came to an abrupt stop.
The statement says, in part, “We have to notify all Nigerians that we recently left a meeting with the federal administration in which we attempted to persuade them to pay attention to the concerns of the Nigerian people and workers.
“The outcome of this meeting earlier today, however, did not change anything or the course which we have set for ourselves tomorrow as custodians of the interests and desires of the Nigerian workers and people.”
