According to Akin Rotimi, the House of Representatives’ spokesperson, lawmakers in the Red Chamber have apparently started receiving their opulent SUVs.
The decision to buy bulletproof cars for the principal officers and imported SUVs for each legislator caused a backlash because of the ongoing hardship that the people of the country are currently facing.
The Senate has defended the decision, highlighting the lawmakers’ requirement for the cars to support their work.
In an interview with Punch, Rotimi revealed that certain House members had accepted delivery of the SUVs, but she also stated that women lawmakers and those with disabilities received top priority, and that those without open legal matters were given special attention.
A few participants have begun accepting their cars as deliveries. Women in the parliament, individuals with disabilities of all kinds, and the elderly were accorded priority.
“The management has also ensured that only members who have been fully disposed of their court cases will be given the vehicles to avoid problems,” he said.
Rotimi’s words were corroborated by a second source who craved anonymity, saying that the management is very keen on members justifying the use of the vehicle for their legislative operations.
“This particular Assembly is extremely picky about doing things correctly. Previously, attendees would gather their cars and auction them off, but the Speaker has made it clear that this is not acceptable.
The spokeswoman was given the task of informing members internally and making sure that no member was forced to sell their cars because they belonged to the National Assembly.
“The management is sincerely investigating beyond the circular, especially to defend the purchase, since the cars were purchased to grant legislators some autonomy over the executive,” the source revealed.
