Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, has declared that the electoral body is not a political party and that it will not field a candidate in the governorship elections scheduled for November 11 in the states of Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi.
Yakubu made the remark, according to the commission’s bulletin in Abuja, while visiting a few INEC offices to evaluate the polls’ readiness.
He said that when the people elect their leaders, INEC is dedicated to making sure that the elections in the states are legitimate.
“INEC is not a political party and is not fielding a candidate for governor on November 11th.”
βAll we are going to do is to ensure that the people of Bayelsa and Imo States choose whoever they want to be their governors and our responsibility is to protect the peopleβs choice,β he stated.
Yakubu went on to say that in order to ensure a seamless election process, all Registration Area Centers (RACs) in the states of Bayelsa and Imo must be completely active by the time of the poll.
He continued to emphasize the commission’s resolve to make sure poll workers fulfill their duties on election day.
