The State Trucks and Cargo Operation Committee was established by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to solve the ongoing traffic congestion on the access routes to the ports and the surrounding areas of Apapa.
The state government and the Ministry of Transportation’s work rules were strictly adhered to at the inauguration, which was presided over by Assistant Director Tiamiyu Oluwatosin.
Oluwatosin stressed the need for a speedy resolution to the traffic problem in order to bring order back to the impacted areas, speaking on behalf of Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation.
He highlighted issues such as extortion and harassment of truck drivers by hoodlums, underscoring the need for the committee to collaborate with the board of trustees to establish effective procedures.
Osiyemi stated, “The government felt it was time to resolve the crisis and move the industry forward. There are cases of extortion and hoodlums harassing truck drivers on the road. I want this committee to sit down with the board of trustees to fashion a way to do things appropriately.”
The Commissioner charged the newly inaugurated committee with the responsibility of addressing the challenges faced by truckers in the state.
He emphasized that the success of the committee would hinge on the cooperation of the association’s members and assured them of necessary support from the state government and the Ministry of Transportation.
In response, Lukman Shittu, the chairman of the newly inaugurated committee, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State government and the Ministry of Transportation for constituting the committee.
Shittu acknowledged the significance of the task at hand and pledged the committee’s commitment to working with civility to overcome the lingering crisis in the sector.
