The United States has been notified by Israeli authorities that the offensive against Hamas, which is currently in its intensive phase and involves large airstrikes and a considerable ground operation, is expected to come to an end in the next two to three weeks.
It was made clear that this will mean a decrease in intensity and a move toward more focused strikes, even if it will not mark the end of combat operations.
The focus will reportedly be on pursuing the remaining leadership of Hamas.
The U.S. has been urging Israel to prioritize civilian safety during its offensive. President Biden voiced concern about Israel’s international standing due to “indiscriminate bombing” in densely populated areas.
Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, during a meeting with national security adviser Jake Sullivan, acknowledged the likelihood of a protracted conflict, stating the war “will last more than several months,” predicting the next phase of targeted raids is likely to be a long one.
Health officials in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip say more than 18,000 people have been killed during the conflict.
