Algeria failed to beat Angola in the AFCON opener as the Angola side equalized in the second half to tie the match. The former was the outright favourite coming into this match while Angola was the underdog.

But the final result didn’t look like what many expected as Angola surprised their counterpart Algeria with a positive outing on Matchday one

Algeria took the lead thanks to a goal from Baghdad Boundjah in the 18th minute of the match. He was assisted by Youcef Belaili for the only goal the Desert Foxes of Algeria scored in the match.

After the restart, the Algerian side led by former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez went in search of the defining goal to seal the win.

Instead, midfield duo Nabil Bentaleb and Ismael Bennacer ended up being booked in the 48th and 52nd minute respectively.

However, in the 68th minute, the Angolans would get their goal as Agostinho Cristovao Mabululu netted from the Penalty spot to make it 1-1.

It finished 1-1 between Algeria and Angola in the AFCON match in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
