A longstanding land dispute between Eda Oniyo in Ekiti State and neighbouring Obbo Ayegunle in Kwara State escalated into violence, resulting in the death of one person.

The conflict, which occurred on Saturday, has prompted a swift response from state and local authorities.

Taiwo Olatunbosun, Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, confirmed the fatality in a statement released on Sunday, expressing deep regret over the incident.

“One person from the community (Eda Oniyo in Ilejemeje Local Government Area) was reportedly killed in the fracas,” he said.

In his appeal for calm, Olatunbosun noted that a combined force of soldiers, police, and members of the Amotekun Corps had been dispatched to the scene immediately to quell the violence.

“The situation has been brought under control,” he assured, adding that additional troops had been deployed to safeguard the community.

The commissioner highlighted that the Army formation in Kwara State had been contacted to deploy troops along the Kwara side of the border to prevent further clashes. He expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to those injured.

Olatunbosun reiterated the Ekiti State Government’s dedication to maintaining peace and security, emphasizing that those responsible for the violence would be apprehended and prosecuted.

He stressed the importance of allowing security agencies to manage the situation without interference.

The Eleda of Eda Oniyo, Oba Julius Awolola, provided details of the attack, stating, “The Obbo people came armed into our town. They could not attack the Secretariat because some policemen were there.”
