Euro 2024: Netherlands edge past Poland with late Weghorst winner

Wout Weghorst scored a late winner for the Netherlands on Sunday evening to begin the country’s Group D run of the Euro 2024 on a winning note against Poland without the injured Robert Lewandowski.

Adam Buksa, who played as the central striker in the absence of Poland’s all-time leading goal scorer, Lewandowski, leapt highest to head the Poles ahead in the 16th minute from a corner kick to undo all the initial possession by the Dutch side.

The goal was against the run of play as both sides sized up each other. Memphis Depay slammed his shot wide in the 22nd minute after a good passage of play by the Dutch side

The 1988 European champions poured forward once again after Depay’s chance but the Polish resisted the onslaughts.

However, there was no stopping Gody Gakpo whose driving effort at the edge of the box after he profited from a Nathan Ake interception saw the ball deflect off a sea of Polish defenders and into the net leaving Wojciech Sczeszny stranded.

Second-half substitute, Wout Weghorst put the Netherlands ahead in the 83rd minute with a crisp finish after Nathan Ake’s pass and a delicate touch by Gigi Wijnaldum set him up for the goal.

The goal was his seventh of his last nine goals, coming in from off the bench.
