Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), says the federal government has evacuated citizens who were willing to return home from Sudan.

Dabiri-Erewa, who spoke with journalists in Abuja , said the citizens were evacuated due to the escalating war in Sudan.

The NiDCOm chairperson did not disclose the number of Nigerians who were evacuated from Sudan.

The Sudanese authorities have recently issued a two-week expulsion notice to all foreigners living in the country.

The Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, have been engaged in a violent power tussle since April 2023.

The crisis has led to the displacement of many citizens, while over 2000 reportedly died as a result of the war in June 2023.

The United Nations said more than 10 million people have deserted their homes and are currently at risk of famine in the country.

NAN reports that hostility towards foreigners, especially people from other African countries, has been on the increase.

The staff and diplomats of international aid organisations were said to have left Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, after the outbreak of war.

The international workers are working from Port Sudan, where the situation is relatively stable.
