Ezenwa Onyewuchi, the senator representing the Imo East Senatorial District at the Red Chambers, has left the Labour Party (LP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senator Onyewuchi announced his departure from the Labour Party one year after winning the 2023 senatorial election under their platform.
The senator also expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration in his letter.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read his letter of defection aloud on the Red Chambers floor on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
“This decision is due to the intractable division and crisis in the Labour Party that sponsored my election into the senate”, part of the letter read.
“We give our unflinching support to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and of course, support his administration aimed at achieving sustainable development for our country.”
Ezenwa Onyewuchi has served as a representative for the Owerri-Municipal/Owerri-North/West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Recall in 2022, Senator Onyewuchi made his first defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party (LP).
The former Labour Party senator had written to Ahmad Lawan, the Senate President at the time, stating: “I wish to inform Mr. President and distinguished senators of my defection from the People’s Democratic Party to the Labour Party. This is after due consultation with my family, constituents, and supporters.”
