France beat Egypt to set up Olympic men’s football final against Spain

France will face Spain in a great game in prospect in the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament gold medal match on Friday.

France came from a goal down to beat 10-man Egypt 3-1 in the second semifinals game Monday night after extra time in Lyon.

France beat Argentina in the quarterfinals to book a meeting with the Egyptians in front of  boisterous fans.

The game had ended in 1-1 draw at the regulation time and an extra 30 minutes was played in search of the team that would compete for the gold medal of the football tournament with Spain.

Mahmoud Saber had fired the Pharaohs into a shock lead but Jean-Philippe Mateta with a brace, and Michael Olise’s late strike secured a place in the final for the hosts.

Le Blues have not won the football gold of the Olympics since they did so in Los Angeles 40 years ago, while Egypt were making a semifinals appearance in 60 years, Monday night. 

The Egyptians were reduced to 10 men towards the end of the game.

Egypt will face Morocco in an all-African third place final Thursday evening for the bronze medal match.
