Oluwapelumi Olayinka, a visionary Nigerian filmmaker and entrepreneur based in the United Kingdom, is taking the rich cultural heritage of Adire fabric to the global stage, aiming to both celebrate and preserve this time-honored textile. As the founder of Ektaktos Collectibles, Olayinka is dedicated to reimagining Adire for modern audiences, transforming the traditional hand-dyed fabric into vibrant, contemporary fashion pieces that resonate from London to Toronto.
In a recent chat with ipledge2nigeria.net, Olayinka shared her mission to connect international audiences with the captivating stories and intricate craftsmanship that Adire embodies. By creating a diverse collection of ready-to-wear clothing, she hopes to make this piece of Nigeria’s heritage accessible and stylish for people worldwide, particularly in Western markets like the UK and Canada.
“Adire is more than just fabric; it’s a tapestry of our heritage,” Olayinka explained. “Every piece tells a story, bearing the imprints of our ancestors’ artistry and innovation. I want people to see beyond the patterns and appreciate the history and craftsmanship poured into each design.”
Over the last four years, Olayinka has devoted herself to weaving Nigerian culture into her fashion brand, which now boasts an impressive array of Inspired ready-to-wear pieces. From elegant formal wear to chic swimwear and comfortable loungewear, Ektaktos Collectibles celebrates the beauty and vibrancy of Nigerian culture. Each piece showcases her meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to quality, earning her brand acclaim in the fashion industry.
“What sets Ektaktos Collectibles apart is our dedication to craftsmanship and cultural significance,” she added. “Whether it’s a unique outfit for a special event or a statement piece for daily wear, our collection caters to a variety of tastes while preserving the essence of Adire.”
Olayinka’s creative reach extends beyond fashion. She also founded a theatre company focused on African storytelling. Her debut stage play, Wives and Mothers, produced in 2021, premiered at the Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta. The production, which explores complex family dynamics in Africa, underscores her commitment to cultural advocacy through art.
“Through theatre, I want to tell stories that resonate globally, fostering understanding and cultural exchange,” she concluded.
