Former Nigerian international Dimeji Lawal has voiced his support for Nigeria’s Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface, urging patience as the forward works to rediscover his goal-scoring form for the national team.
According to Brila.net, Lawal, however, believes that Boniface should not be blamed entirely for the disparity, citing the challenges of adapting to African football.
Boniface has been under scrutiny for his underwhelming performances during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and his overall record for the Super Eagles.
In 11 appearances for the national team, the Bayer Leverkusen striker has managed just one goal, a stark contrast to his prolific club form.
Last season, Boniface was a standout performer for Bayer Leverkusen, netting 21 goals and providing 10 assists in 34 matches under Xabi Alonso.
This season, he has already tallied eight goals and one assist in 15 appearances. Despite this, his inability to replicate such form for the Super Eagles has drawn criticism.
“I don’t think anyone should blame Boniface for his inability to translate his goal-scoring form for Bayer Leverkusen to the Super Eagles,” Lawal said.
“We have seen it oftentimes that players score goals for their respective clubs in Europe, but when it comes to African football, they are not productive.”
Lawal also emphasized the challenges faced by coaches in such situations. “If he had been dropped out of that team and we lost that game without him, people would ask Eguavoen questions. That’s why it is difficult for coaches to make decisions.”
Drawing comparisons, Lawal referenced Nigerian legend, Kanu Nwankwo, who, despite his stellar career, never scored in the Africa Cup of Nations.
“Remember that Kanu Nwankwo played in all the Nations Cup before he retired, but he never scored a single goal.
“Will anyone tell me any coach inviting Kanu is stupid? However, I believe Boniface will rediscover his goal-scoring form for the Super Eagles soon.”
Lawal expressed confidence in Boniface’s ability to eventually find his rhythm with the Super Eagles.
“Watching Boniface score in one of the best leagues in the world is something we all appreciate.
It would be wrong not to invite him to the senior national team. I am sure such a coach will be inviting trouble for himself from Nigerians.”
As Coach Eguaveon has previously said Boniface remains a key player for the Super Eagles, and fans will hope he can carry his impressive club form into the national team as they prepare for future tournaments.
