The incident involving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Rita Uguamaye, has ignited a nationwide debate on the boundaries of free speech and the responsiveness of our leaders to citizens’ grievances.

Rita Uguamaye, serving in Lagos, took to TikTok under the handle @talktoraye to express her frustrations over the escalating economic hardships faced by Nigerians. In her emotional video, she described President Bola Tinubu as a “terrible” leader, highlighting the government’s perceived neglect of the populace’s suffering. 

The video quickly went viral, eliciting mixed reactions. The NYSC promptly summoned Uguamaye, indicating potential disciplinary actions for her public dissent. Further intensifying the situation, Presidential aide Temitope Ajayi reportedly called for severe punishment, suggesting that the corps member had violated the NYSC code of conduct and should face the ultimate penalty.

Despite official announcements of an increased monthly allowance for corps members from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, many continue to receive the former amount.
