Twelve nomadic schools in Benue state have been shut down following the wave of attacks by Fulani herdsmen on farming communities in Benue state.

 

Prof. Bashir Usman, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Nomadic Education made the revelation yesterday in Benin, the Edo State capital while delivering a lecture at a workshop for nomadic teachers in the South-South region.

 

According to Professor Usman, the ongoing conflict was also affecting the enrolment of children in nomadic schools across the state.

 

“The conflict is definitely affecting child enrolment in nomadic schools, particularly in Benue State. We have 24 nomadic schools there; 12 of them have been shut down completely due to the conflict and they have all moved toNasarawa State.

 

“The other 12 schools that are not affected are fishers and migrant primary schools. But the 12 nomadic schools have been completely shut down now,” he said.

 

On the scope of the workshop, the Executive Secretary said it was to train and retrain the teachers, in order for them to be able to provide counsel for the already traumatized children.
