One of the major measures that have moved developed nations forward was the fact that their academics were able to research the prevailing challenges that have for years beset their economies.
Almost all of these scholars came up with findings that reflect the true nature of problems that bedevil their national economy. However one major feature that distinguished these researchers was that they carried out a balanced study of their nations; they were not lazy with it, they did not limit the population or area of study of their researches to a particular village or ethnic group. Not minding the cost, material time and finance, they ensured that their research works covered all geographical areas of their nations. By that, they were able to truly identify those problems ailing their economies.
Come in Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari
Few weeks ago, 83 years old Olusegun Obasanjo defended his Ph.D. Thesis titled “Resolving the Unfinished Agenda in Liberation Theology: Leadership, Poverty and Underdevelopment in North Eastern Nigeria” at the National Open University of Nigeria.
That is a true intellectually mobile man; not so with Baba Buhari who claimed to much younger than his younger sister. His is a president that is differently lazy. He has ever been known to be academically lazy. This claim is justified by the fact that he has refused to develop himself outside barracks education; even as epitomized in his secondary school certificate’s saga at the heel of 2015 general election. So any academically mobile mind will not blame Buhari for any of his errors. No! One can only give what they have. What does he know to be the nitty-gritty of research and he wants to sound academically; the fault is of those who are writing for him.
However, the fact that Buhari should not be blamed based on his lack of education does not warrant that he should be insulting the collective sensibility of Nigerian youths, by embarrassing them at international fora as Commonwealth Business Forum.
How anyone can adjudge Buhari’s assertion to be the truth? Today, the bulk of Hausa-Fulani youths are practically doing nothing than to be trained and become nothing but specialist alamajiris from where they will become brigands. They don’t go to school, neither will they learn a trade, but will rather take pleasure in begging alms on the street and from there graduate to become political thugs, terrorists and therefrom metamorphose to killer-herdsmen.
From the foregoing, whoever will understand the angle at which Buhari was talking from would know that he was very right. Judging by his finding, one would know that Buhari has only displayed some level of educational laziness and intellectual retardness.
Buhari’s offence is premised on the fact that he failed to tell the Forum the Population of his research work is of the bulk of the youths who are of his kinsfolks; Hausa-Fulani youths who will not want to do anything than ‘rankadedeing’ some Alhajis and politicians; and to beg virtually on all the streets of Nigeria.
Surely, his area of study is Katsina which he failed to mention in the Forum and his Sample Size is the youths of Daura his hometown. So he needs not to be blamed for that. How many states has he visited since he became the president for an on the spot assessment of how his clueless policies are faring or to commission one project or the other apart from travelling to Daura almost every weekend and the fact that those almajiris would teem around him gave him such self-conceited illusion to conclude that wise.
Else, when he visited Lagos, he should tell us how many youths came to give him Sai Baba? Did he deem it fit to enter Computer Village to see how Nigerian youths sweat to eke out a living? Has he ever been to Aba to see the ingenious industrial innovations and inventions of the youths there? Has he been to Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Oyo or Ogun to see how youths sweat on their farms?
Buhari only went to Westminster for a show of foolhardy by placing the cart before horse. Our own president wanted to make a show to the world that he is good in research without following the sequence therein. He wanted to be at par with all other participants in that forum but had failed to learn.
And if Buhari would say he is right, that his finding can be generalized to the totality of Nigerian Youths then that would amount to contradiction of earlier claim made by his economic team that asserted that almost all Nigerian youths have now been fully engaged in what was never mentioned.
