Recently, the presidential candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, in an unassuming fashion stated that his political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian during the coming elections. 

Atiku made this statement on Sunday, February 19, in Rivers when he spoke with PDP stakeholders in the state after his presidential campaign rally. 

The former Nigerian Vice President said he chose a unique style of campaign that is free from violence and rancour. 

Atiku’s stance is much like that of the former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who in the run-up to the 2015 presidential election declared that his political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.

According to political pundits, Jonathan made the submission when he perceived that his refusal to concede defeat will result in bloodshed if the results of the poll did not favour him.

In a rather bizarre twist, stretching this perception further has led some political observers into concluding that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential candidate repeating the same position on Sunday, February 19, in Rivers State is because he foresees defeat ahead of him. 

Clearly, Atiku was only referring to the fact that the PDP campaign council improvised with its pattern of rallies to avoid violence in the state whose governor, Nyesom Wike, has been at odds with him. 

The former vice president said he chose a unique style of the presidential campaign to protect the people from violence triggered by the same persons whose responsibility it is to ensure their security.

In recent times, there have been increased mischievous and extreme diatribes between mainly the supporters of the PDP and APC.

Also, in similar circumstances, the presidential candidate of the APC likened that of the Labour Party to the Biblical Peter who denied Jesus Christ before the third cock’s crow.

These tirades are too infantile for candidates that deserve to be addressed as men of timbre and calibre.
