Regarding the royalties of his late former signee, Ilerioluwa Aloba, better known as Mohbad, the House of Representatives has summoned well-known Nigerian singer Azeez Fashola, better known as Naira Marley.

This action is a result of an inquiry that was started by a House-appointed panel that included committees on juvenile justice, justice, and legislative compliance.

The House has extended an invitation to Naira Marley’s legal team to join Mohbad’s legal team in the proceedings.

 

Yusuf Ibrahim, the panel’s clerk, officially announced the decision to investigate Mohbad’s royalties during his time working for Naira Marley’s Marlian Records in a letter dated Thursday.

 

The scheduled meeting for Naira Marley and Mohbad’s legal team is slated for October 31, and it aims to delve into the circumstances surrounding the royalties and other benefits that Mohbad was entitled to during his association with the record label.

 

This inquiry also seeks to establish the extent of Naira Marley’s interactions with various copyright organisations, with the gathered information serving as a guide for further legislative action.

 

The letter to Naira Marley and Mohbad’s legal representatives reads, “The House Committees on Justice, Youth and Legislative Compliance invite you and the legal team of MOHBAD for an interactive meeting session as regards a referral received being a resolution of the House of Representatives during their plenary session on Tuesday 26th September 2023 with respect to the circumstances surrounding the royalties and other benefits of Mohbad and to ascertain the level of your interaction with other relevant copyright organisations; such information will guide the committee on further legislative action.

 

“In view of the above, you are kindly invited for an interactive session with the chairman, Committee on Justice, Youth and legislative compliance scheduled as follows.”

 

The tragic death of Mohbad at the age of 27 on September 12 has drawn attention to this investigation.

Before his demise, Mohbad had petitioned the Assistant Inspector-General of Police leading the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Lagos, regarding threats to his life by socialite Sam Larry and armed assailants who had allegedly attacked him while shooting a video.

Additionally, several videos had emerged implicating Naira Marley in threatening Mohbad, his former signee, after the demise of the ‘KPK’ singer.
